The Ministry of Interior, represented by Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate, is organizing the 2015 INSARAG Global Meeting on Search and Rescue at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from October 16 to October 20. The event, which will take place under the patronage of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, is hosted for the first time in the UAE, in cooperation with the United Nations’ International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).
Lt. Colonel Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense, announced that the meeting is part of the celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of INSARAG, which grants international accreditation and classification for international search and rescue teams and organizes the international field response for natural disasters. He noted that the meeting is an important event on the United Nations’ agenda, and is held in a different country every five years.
Adding further, Lt. Colonel Al Ansari said: “The meeting will tackle a number of important topics, such as the lessons learned from the Nepal earthquake; response mechanisms to natural disasters around the world; the development of work systems, classification and accreditation of search and rescue teams; and the use of modern techniques in the search and rescue field. The meeting will also review the prerequisites related to the technical features, field capabilities, and individual and collective skills of search and rescue teams around the world.”
He indicated that a number of seminars and forums will be held on the sidelines on the meeting, bringing together search and rescue teams’ leaders from all over the world, in addition to screening of scientific documentary films.
Lt. Colonel Al Ansari explained that the meeting is an opportunity to bring together leaders of field rescue teams; decision makers; and a number of governmental, semi-governmental and private institutions and concerned entities in the field of humanitarian rescue.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, is expected to participate in the meeting, alongside search and rescue leaders from 110 countries, United Nations’ humanitarian organizations, and more than 318 experts and decision makers in the area of search and rescue and civil defense from around the world.
