Huawei Unveils $430 Million Investment to Boost Digital Africa

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The eighth edition of Huawei Connect has opened its doors in Shanghai from September 20 to 22, marking its first event since the global health crisis. This year’s spotlight is on artificial intelligence (AI), reflecting Huawei’s key focus for the African continent. During the Huawei Northern Africa Night event on September 20, Terry HE, President of Huawei Northern Africa (North, West & Central Africa), revealed the company’s renewed strategy to guide Africa towards a "smart and connected future."

This strategy, entitled "Accelerate Intelligence for New Africa", is not just a mere roadmap, but a comprehensive blueprint for Africa's digital and technological future. Given the continent’s young population, with 60% aged 25 or younger, digitalization is emerging as a major catalyst for growth in African nations. Additionally, the continent’s considerable potential in green energy offers an unparalleled competitive advantage in the AI era. Recognizing these strengths, Huawei's new strategy is built around the integration of smart technologies, particularly AI, into vital sectors that shape and influence the daily lives of Africans, including health, education, transportation, finance, agriculture, and mining.

The strategy is structured around three core action areas:

Accelerate intelligence to enhance inclusion, thereby improving people's lives by expanding the coverage and quality of essential services;

Accelerate intelligence to enhance governmental management and bolster the attractiveness of the business and commercial environment;

Accelerate intelligence to heighten operational efficiency and productivity across the economy, particularly in Africa's key industries.

To support this strategy, during the event, Terry HE unveiled a significant investment plan named "Intelligent Future" for the Northern Africa region, encompassing the 28 countries located to the north of the equator within the African continent.

This grand five-year investment initiative, totaling $430 million, is allocated as follows: $200 million to establish the region's first public cloud center, offering over 200 cloud services, and an additional $200 million to support 200 local software partners and empower 1,300 channel partners. In term of talent development, Huawei will invest $30 million to train 10,000 local developers and educate 100,000 digital professionals, creating a skilled workforce to drive intelligent transformation in the region.

The challenges are huge, and the stakes are high. "Every technological evolution is characterized by perseverance, exploration, and investment", stated Terry HE, President of Huawei Northern Africa (North, West & Central Africa). He added, “To expedite intelligent transformation in Northern Africa, Huawei will intensify its investments in technologies, ecosystems, and talent.” He stressed the critical importance of close collaboration among governments, businesses, educational institutions, and communities to realize these ambitions. In conclusion, he called for united action, stating, “Let's join forces to usher in a smarter world in Africa and fulfill the aspirations of its people."

For Huawei, Africa represents a pivotal element of the company's growth ambitions, underscoring its unwavering commitment to the continent's digital transformation.

AGCO to Acquire Trimble Ag Assets and Technologies Through a Joint Venture Focused on Next-Generation Precision Ag Technology

DULUTH, Ga. - Thursday, 28. September 2023

Transformational transaction creates an industry leading global mixed-fleet Precision Ag platform

Enhances AGCO’s comprehensive technology offering around guidance, autonomy, precision spraying, connected farming, data management and sustainability

AGCO’s combined Precision Ag revenue now expected to exceed $2.0 billion by 2028

Transaction is expected to be accretive to AGCO’s revenue growth, operating margin profile and earnings per share in the first full year post-close

AGCO’s Grain & Protein business to be placed under strategic review

(BUSINESS WIRE)--AGCO Corporation (NYSE: AGCO), a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of agricultural machinery and Precision Ag technology, announced it has entered into a Joint Venture (JV) with Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB), where AGCO will acquire an 85% interest in Trimble’s portfolio of Ag assets and technologies for cash consideration of $2.0 billion and the contribution of JCA Technologies.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here:

The JV creates a global leading mixed-fleet Precision Ag platform that will be the exclusive provider of Trimble Ag’s comprehensive technology offering, supporting the future development and distribution of next-generation Ag technologies. Trimble Ag offers a wide variety of user-friendly technologies compatible across brands, equipment models and farm types. Its hardware, software solutions and cloud-based applications span all aspects of the crop cycle, from land preparation to planting and seeding to harvest.

“This landmark transaction creates a JV that becomes the premier mixed-fleet Precision Ag business in the world and accelerates AGCO’s strategic transformation,” said Eric Hansotia, AGCO’s Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “This deal significantly enhances AGCO’s technology stack with disruptive technologies that cover every aspect of the crop cycle, which ultimately helps us better serve farmers no matter what brand they use.”

The JV will complement and enhance AGCO’s existing Precision Ag portfolio to deliver even more industry leading solutions across the crop cycle while supporting over 10,000 equipment models. By combining these two Precision Ag portfolios and leveraging multi-channel access across Trimble Ag, AGCO OEM & Aftermarket, other OEMs, and Precision Planting dealers, the JV will be positioned to drive outsized growth and better provide next-generation technologies to even more farmers around the world.

Hansotia continued, “The exclusive access to Trimble Ag products, combined with AGCO’s existing Precision Ag offerings also accelerates AGCO’s growth ambitions around autonomy, precision spraying, connected farming, data management and sustainability. All of these touchpoints will result in us being even more farmer focused."

Commercial synergies resulting from direct access to AGCO’s global OEM, aftermarket, other OEM, and retrofit channels, in addition to modest run-rate cost synergies are expected to approximately double the JV’s EBITDA by year 5 post closing.

"Farmers today are looking for mixed fleet solutions across their tractors and the implements that they use to most efficiently and sustainably feed the world," said Rob Painter, CEO of Trimble. "We believe a joint venture with AGCO, complemented by the successful mixed fleet approach that they have developed with their Precision Planting business model, can help us better serve farmers and OEMs together.”

The $2.0 billion purchase price for AGCO’s 85% ownership in the Trimble Ag business represents an implied enterprise value of approximately $2.35 billion and implies a transaction multiple of approximately 13.8x based on 2023E EBITDA of approximately $170 million. Inclusive of estimated revenue and run-rate cost synergies of $100 million by year 3 and the net present value of tax attributes in excess of $50 million, the synergized multiple is approximately 8.5x on a 2023E basis.

The transaction is not subject to a financing condition. AGCO has secured $2.0 billion in fully committed bridge financing from Morgan Stanley Senior Funding, Inc. The purchase price of $2.0 billion is expected to be funded by a combination of existing liquidity, free cash flow generation and new debt. AGCO remains committed to maintaining its solid investment grade credit rating.

Closing is expected in the first half of 2024, subject to the satisfaction of regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

AGCO has also announced that the Grain & Protein business will be placed under strategic review as part of AGCO’s broader portfolio transformation. Under this review, AGCO will assess all strategic options to ensure the Grain & Protein customers are serviced in the best way possible, and that the business is best positioned to maximize its full potential.

Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC is acting as exclusive financial advisor to AGCO. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP is acting as legal advisor to AGCO, and Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders LLP is acting as its financing counsel.

Centerview Partners LLC is acting as exclusive financial advisor to Trimble, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP is acting as its legal advisor.

Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Beyond2020 Initiative Improves Access to Clean Water for 10,000 Vietnamese

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, 28. September 2023

The deployment of sustainable water fountains to 5 villages and 3 schools in rural Vietnam supports the country’s goal of providing clean water to 100% of its population by 2045

With the aim of intensifying efforts towards achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Beyond2020, the UAE-driven humanitarian initiative, has installed environmentally sustainable freshwater resources in communities in rural Vietnam, providing clean water access to 10,000 people.

Launched by the Zayed Sustainability Prize in partnership with several leading organisations, Beyond2020 carries forward the humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan by providing sustainable technologies and solutions to vulnerable communities around the world. Vietnam marks the 16th deployment of Beyond2020, which will continue to offer life-transforming interventions to a broad number of beneficiaries worldwide, providing tech for good and fostering development that is inclusive and sustainable.

Commenting on the installation in Vietnam, H.E. Dr. Bader Al Matrooshi, Ambassador of UAE to Vietnam, said, “Both the UAE and Vietnam have a strong resolve to promote innovative solutions that urgently address pressing sustainability challenges. As we expand water access to rural Vietnamese communities through the implementation of pioneering water filters, we not only tackle a critical need but also foster resilience and well-being. Beyond2020 remains a symbol of collaboration, connecting innovation to bring about positive real-world change.”

H.E. Nguyen Manh Tuan, Ambassador of Vietnam to the UAE, said: “Providing safe drinking water to all Vietnamese is a top priority for our government. The Beyond2020 initiative, which has brought safe drinking water to 10,000 local people, is an important step to unlocking access to sustainable sources of water that can help our countrymen in the remote areas live a healthier, more productive life.”

Amine Bel Hadj Soulami, CEO of BNP Paribas Middle East & Africa, a partner of the initiative said: “As a responsible bank, BNP Paribas is proud to partner with Beyond2020 and mobilise resources for communities in need. As the impact of climate change mounts, millions of people face greater challenges in terms of extreme events, health effects, food security, livelihood security and water security.  This is why, more than ever, we must collaborate with global partners, such as Beyond2020 to create real and scalable impact.”

With over 2,360 rivers, Vietnam has abundant supplies of natural water resources, however, the country faces severe water shortages. Although the country has made rapid progress in improving water supplies over the past few decades, in the country’s remote areas – where two-thirds of the population reside – it is reported that less than 50% of households have access to safe water and sanitation. Providing a simple water purification system that can clean the water from its rivers and wells would significantly bolster the nation’s water security and also improve key health outcomes.

Eight water purification systems developed by Safe Water Cube, a global nonprofit organisation and a Zayed Sustainability Prize 2019 finalist under the Water category, are now being used to provide clean water to five villages and three schools in the Quảng Nam province of Vietnam.

The Safe Water Cube fountains are developed by the France-based Agir Ensemble Association, whose mission is to raise private and public funds to install Safe Water Cube fountains in countries where access to drinking water is a real health issue. Powered by a hand pump, the fountain filters microbes, viruses and other impurities from the water through various filters without the use of harmful chemicals or an electrical power source. One Safe Water Cube fountain can supply 1,000 litres of clean water per hour and provide clean water to a village of up to 1,000 people.

In addition to providing safe drinking water to the people of Quảng Nam province, Safe Water Cube has trained 26 people, including 14 men and 8 women, in the use, upkeep and maintenance of the fountain.

Five villages and three schools were selected to receive the Safe Water Cubes. These include A Bat Village, Chaval Commune, Nam Giang District; Pa Dau Village, Thanh My City, Nam Giang District; Tan Doi Village, Dai Son Commune, Dai Loc District; Lap Thuan Village, Dai Hong Commune, Dai Loc District; and Ngoc Son Tay Village, Binh Phuc Commune, Thang Binh District; and three schools in the villages of Nha tho Hoang Phuoc, Dai Hong, and Dai Loc.

The deployment in Vietnam marks the third time Safe Water Cube has been installed in remote, underserved communities through the Beyond2020 initiative by providing access to clean water in Madagascar for 8,500 people and in Cambodia for 4,400 people.

Beyond2020 brings together a leading number of partners which include Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, BNP Paribas, Mubadala Energy and Masdar.

Since its inception, a total of 16 deployments have been rolled out, including energy, health, water and food-related solutions, transforming the lives of over 211,800 people in the sixteen different countries across Africa, South America, Middle East and Asia.  Another four countries have been identified as deployment grounds for new projects.

Organon Recognized on Fortune’s 2023 Change the World List for Leadership in Expanding Access to Contraceptive Choice

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Wednesday, 27. September 2023

Her Promise Access Initiative helped prevent 57 million unplanned pregnancies putting the company approximately halfway to its goal of preventing 120 million unplanned pregnancies by 2030

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Organon (NYSE: OGN), a global healthcare company with a focus on women’s health, has been named to Fortune’s 2023 Change the World list for its leadership in helping women and girls around the world take control of their reproductive health. Organon has a portfolio of programs, collaborations, and investments designed to lift women for generations to come through family planning education and contraceptive access. Fortune’s annual list recognizes companies that have had a positive social impact through activities that are part of their core business strategy.

Nearly 50% of pregnancies worldwide are unplanned, leading to health risks and reduced educational and employment opportunities for mother and child – challenges that can span generations.1, 2 Largely caused by a lack of access to contraceptive information and services, this problem is so significant that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has deemed unintended pregnancy a global public health crisis.2

“Organon was founded with a vision to create a better and healthier every day for every woman. Part of that responsibility is to address contraception education and access barriers globally,” said Kevin Ali, CEO of Organon. “While we are incredibly proud to be recognized for the progress we’ve made, our work is far from done. Together with our partners, we aim to prevent 120 million unintended pregnancies by 2030 – a critical step toward realizing our vision of a future in which all 4 billion women and girls worldwide are empowered to be in control of their family planning.”

Organon is increasing access to contraceptive choice globally through cross-sector partnerships that are fueling public health solutions, addressing inequities, and giving women more opportunities to pursue education and economic independence, including:

Establishing Her Plan is Her Power, a $30 million, multi-year global initiative to reduce unplanned pregnancies through global advocacy as well as investments in community-driven solutions in the United States, in low- and middle-income countries, and around the globe.

Advancing the Her Promise Access Initiative, through which Organon works alongside partners to expand contraception availability to the 73 lowest-income countries. The initiative has already helped to prevent 57 million unintended pregnancies to date.

Establishing a new model for advancing progress in women’s health through sustainable financing, which is being used to mobilize capital towards initiatives that might not otherwise receive adequate support. Programs to increase access to sexual and reproductive health education and services are currently running in eight countries in different phases including Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, as well as Thailand, Kenya, and South Africa.

A global grants program, which helps women and girls take control of their reproductive health. The first cohort of grantees includes organizations in 13 countries, including the Dominican Republic, South Korea, Germany, and Thailand.

Fortune's Change the World list is selected and ranked by the editors of Fortune based on the magazine's own reporting and analysis. Nominees are assessed based on the reach, nature, and durability of the company's impact on specific societal problems, degree of innovation, impact on the company, and how integral the initiative is to a company's overall strategy.

LESSENGERS Begins Volume Production of 800G AOCs and Transceivers – Incorporating “Direct Optical Wiring” Technology – for AI/ML Clusters and Hyperscale Data Center Operations

GLASGOW, Scotland - Wednesday, 27. September 2023

Latest advance in optical component design offers several operational and economic benefits.

(BUSINESS WIRE)--LESSENGERS Inc., a provider of innovative optical components based on its patented “direct optical wiring” (DOW) technology, today announced that its new 800G transceiver product (800G OSFP SR8), will begin volume production in the Q4 2023 and begin shipping to customers. DOW is a polymer-based air-cladded waveguide technology that is particularly useful for optical interconnects in the data center and high-performance computing environments.

DOW connects the active photonic devices such as laser diodes or photodiodes directly to the optical fiber, providing high-density and high-speed optical signal connectivity between switches, servers, and other devices within the data center or HPC clusters. This capability enables several operational efficiencies and economic benefits, such as:

No active alignment – cost-competitive optical coupling

No use of multi-channel lens assembly – near-zero optical crosstalk

No air gap – dramatically lower reflection noise

High degree of freedom in heat sink design – much lower junction temperature

These attributes make the 800G OSFP SR8 and other products for high-speed active optical cables and transceivers high-performance, highly reliable and cost compelling.

“Demand for optical connectivity in AI Clusters is accelerating innovation”, commented Dr. Vladimir Kozlov, CEO and Founder of LightCounting. “New designs of pluggable and co-packaged optical engines rely on high density parallel connectivity, which need new packaging and fiber-coupling methods. Direct optical wiring, developed by LESSENGERS, is a great example of such new approaches.”

“We are proud to announce the volume production of DOW-based 800G AOCs and transceivers,” said Chongcook Kim, CEO at LESSENGERS. “The use of DOW technology enables us to achieve high-performance and low-noise optics by its nature allowing us to streamline the production process flow with complete automation.”

LESSENGERS is participating at next week’s European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) in Glasgow at the SEC – at MR31 and Booth #306.

LESSENGERS is an innovative optical solution provider, powered by its patent DOW technology, which enables cost effective direct optical coupling without the use of lens optics. This provides the most suitable solution for data center applications such as 800G/1.6T optical transceivers, active optical cables (AOCs), on-board, near packaged, or co-packaged optics.

Hithium Battery Production Facility Certified Carbon Neutral

XIAMEN, China - Wednesday, 27. September 2023 AETOSWire Print

International distinction is based on evaluation of plant’s carbon footprint and high-quality offsets

Company aims for carbon neutrality throughout industry chain by 2035

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Stationary battery manufacturer Hithium’s production facility at its headquarters in Xiamen, China, has received the globally recognized carbon neutrality certification PAS 2060 (Certificate number: 0412TZH01106). This certification standard builds on established methodologies, according to TÜV Süd, to calculate the plant’s carbon footprint (such as the GHG-Protocol and ISO 14064) and it assesses, where needed, the impact of high-quality offsetting certificates from climate projects (including CDM, JI, GS, and VCS).

The company aims for the factory to serve as an energy storage industry benchmark, raising the standard for sustainable production as one of the earliest battery production sites in China to receive this certification.

Hithium General Manager Jason Wang commented: “We’re very proud to have achieved this certification so quickly and to be setting a high standard for our industry. Our approach to meeting ESG goals and achieving sustainable manufacturing is rooted in our company culture. From company leadership to every team member, whether in research or sales or on the production line, we see reducing our own carbon emissions as a core commitment.”

On the occasion of its carbon neutral plant certification, Hithium also announced its broader carbon neutrality goals:

Carbon neutrality in group operations by 2025

To achieve carbon neutrality in the core operations of the entire group (scope 1 and 2), Hithium will use over 40% renewable electricity, as well as reduce by 15% the average carbon emissions both of its products and across its supply chain (compared to the benchmark year 2022), and a recycling rate of over 20% for scrapped raw materials.

Demand Increases for Project Professionals with AI Skills, Yet PMI Research Finds Only 18% Have Practical Experience

PMI commits to supporting project professionals in their pursuit of AI mastery in project management, offering tools, training, and community opportunities to forge or hone critical AI skills

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's leading organization for the project management profession, is empowering millions of global project professionals worldwide to adopt, embrace, and leverage artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and generative AI (GenAI). PMI is developing the tools, resources, and learning opportunities – including a free, introductory online course entitled “Generative AI Overview for Project Managers” – project professionals need to leverage AI powered technology while preserving the human touch in project management.

According to McKinsey, GenAI and other technologies have the potential to automate work activities that absorb 60 to 70 percent of employees’ time today. But tools cannot automate interpersonal skills, the invaluable and very necessary skills project managers bring to projects. Communication, problem-solving, collaborative leadership, and strategic thinking – skills PMI calls “power skills” – will continue to be crucial to project success. In fact, PMI research finds that organizations that place a high priority on power skills are significantly better at completing projects that meet business goals. Additionally, they waste less investment due to poor project performance compared to the global average (4.8 percent vs. 5.2 percent), and far less than organizations that put a low priority on power skills (8.8 percent).

“I see an incredible opportunity to elevate the leadership role of project professionals in their organization, thanks to the AI-driven disruption,” said Pierre Le Manh, President & Chief Executive Officer of PMI. “Project professionals are natural learners, problem solvers, innovators and they get things done. Now is the time for us to lead the AI transformation of organizations.”

To keep up with the latest developments in AI technology, project professionals must prioritize continuous learning. The Artificial Intelligence in Project Management Resource Center on is the destination for learning to navigate a new era of efficiency, insight, and growth. The page, complete with AI insights and learning opportunities, will be updated consistently with new, thought-provoking survey findings, thought leadership, industry analysis, academic research, and community-contributed content and publications. The varied data sources – inclusive of PMI's vast community of academic partners, enterprise partners, and millions of project professionals, combined with proprietary research – will set this content apart and make it the go-to resource for project professionals and organizations striving to leverage these tools to improve project success.

PMI will post two new articles in October 2023. Key insights from these articles include:

Project managers can leverage AI for project productivity and enhance power skills. According to the 2023 PMI Annual Global Survey on Project Management, the top three ways project managers use AI are reporting (34%), decision support (33%), and communication (26%). While AI can take on productivity tasks like planning and budgeting, project managers are also using AI as a tool to sharpen specific power skills, so their human interactions and strategic decisions are stronger.

AI Adoption will only increase, so project managers need to upskill quickly to take advantage of this enormous career opportunity. The 2023 PMI Annual Global Survey on Project Management found that 82% of senior leaders said AI will have at least some impact on how projects are run at their organization over the next five years. However, unpublished PMI Customer Experience (CX) research found that only 18% of project managers report having extensive or good practical experience with AI tools and technologies, and 49% have little to no experience with or understanding of AI in the context of project management.

Building organizational resilience, leveraging technical skills, and upskilling teams will help organizations remain competitive. AI is a major disruption that requires businesses to transform. While technical skills are an important part of widespread AI adoption, it is just one piece of the puzzle. For AI to work, organizations need resilience. The BRIGHTLINE® Initiative and Thinkers50 book Building Resilient Organizations, states that organizations must have a clear vision, a flexible mindset, and empowered teams to foster widespread collaboration.

To help project professionals gain the foundational knowledge they need to master AI in project management, PMI launched a free course to serve as a gateway to learning titled “Generative AI Overview for Project Managers.” It provides learners with practical knowledge for using AI that they can apply to their projects immediately. After completing the course, professionals will earn 5 PDUs and a digital badge issued via Credly.

PUMA Welcomes Indian Sustainable Fashion Advocate Aishwarya Sharma To Its Voices Of A RE:GENERATION Initiative

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Global sports company PUMA has expanded the regional reach of its Voices of a RE:GENERATION initiative beyond Europe and the US and added Indian sustainable fashion advocate Aishwarya Sharma to the project.

Aishwarya joins PUMA’s roster of next-gen thinkers as part of its year-long project to advance its sustainability efforts by collaborating with young environmentalists. Based in Delhi, India, Aishwarya is passionate about driving change towards a more sustainable fashion industry and has made a name for herself for her beliefs around women's rights, fashion, social media and climate change at events such as COP27.

Launched in April this year, PUMA’s initiative empowers a cohort of Young Voices to help the brand identify key areas for improvement by giving them a voice alongside leading stakeholders. To date, PUMA’s Young Voices have met with key players at PUMA to discuss the brand’s progress and challenges surrounding its FOREVER.BETTER Sustainability Strategy - and produced PUMA RE:GEN Reports; a podcast series to engage younger generations around sustainability and PUMA’s 10FOR25 target areas. The podcast was created in response to consumer feedback, gathered at PUMA’s Conference of the People event in 2022, which revealed that current sustainability communications were not engaging the next generation.

The latest development of this project will see Aishwarya meet and collaborate with PUMA’s current Young Voices, including:

US-based upcycler Andrew Burgess

Germany-based sustainable and healthy living vlogger Luke Jaque-Rodney

France-based visual artist and creative consultant Jade Roche

Alice Aedy is no longer participating in the initiative, a decision reached through mutual understanding.

Aishwarya Sharma joins PUMA’s Voices of a RE:GENERATION initiative this September and will explore the opportunities and challenges faced by the brand in the area of sustainability, whilst making recommendations for actionable change. She will also work with PUMA to improve the way it communicates sustainability to its India-based audience.

On the announcement, Aishwarya comments: “My passion as a sustainability advocate lies in increasing awareness. I think it’s so important for people in my community and across the world to understand what is really going on in sustainability and this partnership with PUMA will grant me an inside view of how a large corporation tackles such a hugely important and complex challenge. Being able to have a voice in how PUMA communicates sustainability is also a great opportunity to drive change and set a precedent across the industry and I’m very much looking forward to that.”

PUMA is one of the world’s leading sports brands, designing, developing, selling and marketing footwear, apparel and accessories.
