The MoI’s delegation taking part in the joint conference of representatives of the ministries of interior and national human rights committees in Arab countries, reviewed the ministry’s experience in enhancing and protecting human rights.
His Excellency Mr. Mohammed Najem Gharsalli, Tunisian Interior Minister inaugurated the conference’s first session, which was held at the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in Tunisia, which tackled the role of human rights structures across the ministries of interior, towards protecting and boosting human rights.
During the session, Brigadier Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Murr, Head of the Ministry of Interior’s delegation, gave an overview of the MoI’s efforts in the protection of human rights, as reflected in the ministry’s Strategy 2014-2016, and its relation to human rights protection. He also highlighted the ministry’s attention to the institutional framework through the establishment of organizational units and human rights committees across all sectors at the ministry. Brigadier Al Murr also tackled the mechanisms for receiving complaints and reports through the organizational units, hotlines, and electronic systems assigned for this purpose.
Moreover, he highlighted the efforts made by the Ministry of Interior in protecting and providing care for all segments of society; especially women, children, people with special needs, and the elderly; in addition to the specialized programs aimed at qualifying and training of police officers and spreading the human rights culture.
The paper also acquainted attendees with the areas of cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and civil society institutions across the country, in addition to coordination with regional and international bodies and organizations concerned with human rights. During the various conference sessions, participants examined the extent of compliance with human rights requirements through the guide book provided for security bodies; and shed the light on international and regional partnerships between security agencies and national human rights institutions.
The conference, which was held in Tunisia on 3-4, November 2015, was attended by representatives of the ministries of interior in Arab countries and representatives of civil society organizations, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Human Rights Committee at the League of Arab States.
The MoI’s delegation at the conference included Brigadier Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Murr, Director General of Human Rights at the Dubai Police and member of the Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Interior; Colonel Mohammed Khalifa Al-Hamoudi; and Major Abdurrahman Jassim Al Dhaheri from the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior.
