Traffic safety survey

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, January 8th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

Participants in the Ministry of Interior’s Council hosted by Hamed Al Kaff Al Hashemi in Abu Dhabi called for activating traffic safety societies and engaging them in the ongoing efforts, as well as submitting proposals and observations to the concerned authorities; activating a mobile messaging application to send traffic awareness messages about changing speed limits on various roads; and providing traffic safety tips for drivers and building escalators on pedestrian bridges, taking into account the elderly and people who have difficulty in using them.

Participants in the Al Kaff Council also recommended enhancing public control by informing the traffic directorate of reckless and careless behavior of young people in some areas, especially during late-night hours. They also recommended reinforcing the private sector’s role in traffic awareness, preparing a comprehensive questionnaire about traffic issues to be extensively discussed, and setting up alert signals on pedestrian crosswalks.

As per the strategic partnership with the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, the Saeed Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents launched the “Community is a Traffic Cop” initiative during the Council. The initiative is part of Saeed’s societal participations in citizens’ popular ouncils in order to promote community dialogue and collect people’s views on issues related to traffic safety, which is a societal responsibility that requires concerted efforts from all society segments.

Hamed Al Kaff Al Hashemi, host of the council, lauded the societal efforts exerted to reduce all types of traffic accidents. He also lauded the valuable cooperation with the competent authorities to reduce traffic accidents and their resulting deaths and injuries in order to protect young people and save lives that are lost annually due to accidents. He stressed the need to activate the role of community members in increasing commitment to traffic laws and raising awareness about the dangers of excessive speeding.

For his part, Colonel Jamal Al Ameri, Executive Director of the Saaed Society gave an overview of the initiative, which aims to support Abu Dhabi Police’s efforts to improve road users’ behavior, implement traffic laws and safety standards, and increase public awareness and education, on the need to wear seat belts and helmets; reduce speed; the proper methods to cross roads safely, and other risks that cause traffic accidents.

Moreover, Colonel Al Ameri shed the light on the key causes of traffic accidents and delivered awareness- raising messages through realistic films about traffic accidents; guidance films about traffic safety measures to be followed by motorists in the event of rain; in addition to the dangers of using  mobile phones while driving; the importance of wearing seat belts; the risks associated with unsafe crossing of pedestrians, driving recklessly, improper overtaking, the risks of running red lights, and exceeding maximum speed limits.

Counselor Ali Al Hashemi confirmed that abiding by traffic laws is part of the religious culture. “Islam has established the proper principles and systems related to traffic safety in order to preserve human lives. It has condemned and opposed all aggression on human life,” he said. He also pointed out that violating traffic regulations compromises the safety of violators and causes deadly accidents and damages to roads. “Traffic laws need to be considered a mandatory culture and violators must be held accountable. Moreover, parents must teach their children the ethical standards of driving vehicles on roads,” he concluded.

The council, which was organized under the title “Reaching Safety”, tackled the importance of society’s contribution in reducing the negative phenomena and the family’s role in promoting traffic culture and awareness, raising young people’s awareness on the need to avoid reckless stunts and drifting on sand dunes, which compromises the lives of drivers who are mostly young people, as well as the lives of other road users.
