AURAK Civil Engineering Program Granted ABET Accreditation

Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates-Saturday, September 16th 2017 [ AETOS Wire ]

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) has this week announced that its Bachelor of Science in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering has been granted accreditation by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC).

The prestigious Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or ABET, is the leading accrediting body for post-secondary academic programs in ‘applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology’, and this latest accreditation recognizes the quality of the AURAK program.

This welcome news follows from a site visit which took place in October 2016, in which a three-person team visited the university’s campus in Ras Al Khaimah, and now means that three programs within the School of Engineering are accredited by ABET: its Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering, and the Bachelor of Science in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.

Prof. Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, the university’s president, whose focus over his six-year tenure has been accreditation and quality, stated, “This latest accreditation represents yet another positive step forward for this young university. Our School of Engineering remains on course to have all nine of its programs accredited by 2020.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the school’s dean, Prof. Mousa Mohsen, all of the engineering faculty and administration staff whose tireless work is consistently ensuring that we meet our targets and provide our students with a top-quality education.”

Further site visits for the university’s engineering programs are expected during the 2017/18 academic year, as the school also offers undergraduates programs in chemical, computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical and petroleum engineering. The School of Graduate Studies and Research also offers a master’s in engineering project management.

Previously, Prof. Al Alkim highlighted the university’s goal to be institutionally accredited and to have its academic schools and individual programs all fully accredited by their respective international authorities.

While the university continues to pursue international accreditation, extensive work is also being done to expand the capacity of its campus; the construction of new residence halls is underway, as well as the RAK Bank-sponsored School of Business. This is in addition to Building G which was opened in January 2016, and a major landscaping and campus beautification program.
